Muhammad: Violence and Jihad

Introduction

Now we begin the second post in the series. As I mentioned in the first of my two previous posts relating to Muhammad’s treatment of women, the PBS article I came across has multiple articles linked to it. This post will be dealing with one of those articles: Violence and Jihad.

The Article

Straightaway, as with the article dealing with Muhammad and women, there is the usual Taqiyya-laced language, filled with half-truths and the assumption that their readers are somehow unable to reason for themselves. In all honesty, it’s become clear that they sincerely hope you don’t actually take the time to research any of their claims, but this really serves to highlight the methods of Jihad, and for that I must thank them, because they’re making my job easier.

For example, they correctly state that Muhammad’s career can be divided into two separate periods: the Meccan and Medinan. This is hugely important, because this is the reason why the Qur’an is divided into two versions within each book. As both versions, and Muhammad’s career indicate, they are 100% geographically linked to the cities of Mecca and Yathrib (Medina). Unfortunately, they segue into the weeds right after that.

Violence and Jihad, Step One

We begin in the city of Mecca, in which Muhammad begins his mission to convert as many as he can. He begins preaching on the streets of Mecca, and quickly realizes that it’s going to take some time to gain converts. He also realizes that he’s vastly outnumbered by pagan Arabs, Christians and Jews. Knowing that he had to tread lightly, to avoid being wiped out, he preached religious tolerance.

It was for that reason he had revelations such as Qur’an 109:1-6, “Say, “O disbelievers, I do not worship what you worship. Nor are you worshipers of what I worship. Nor will I be a worshiper of what you worship. Nor will you be worshipers of what I worship. For you is your religion, and for me is my religion.” (Say that one ten times fast)

However, while he was openly preaching peace, love and understanding, there was a different story going on behind the scenes. His entire intent was nothing short of total power and control, and he saw the Quraysh, his tribe, as an important link in that chain. He never ceased in his efforts to convert them, though it did cause tremendous strife between him and his tribe. In At-Tabari, vol 6, pg. 101: “We have never seen the like of what we have endured from this man. He has derided our traditional values, abused our forefathers, reviled our religion, caused division among us, and insulted our gods. We have endured a great deal from him.”

What this shows is that his tribesmen felt tremendous insult from the preaching of Muhammad, not because of what he believed, but because he often derided and reviled their beliefs in the process. At-Tabari, vol 6, pg. 93: “The messenger of Allah proclaimed Allah’s message openly and declared Islam publicly to his fellow tribesmen. When he did so, they did not withdraw from him or reject him in anyway…until he spoke of their gods and denounced them. When he did this, they took exception to it and united in opposition and hostility to him, except for those of them whom Allah had protected from error by means of Islam.”

Before long, his tribesmen sought some kind of justice against him, for his disrespectful treatment of them. At-Tabari, vol 6, p. 95: “Abu Talib (Muhammad’s uncle) sent for the messenger of Allah, and when he came in he said, “Nephew here are the shaykhs and nobles of your tribe. They have asked for justice against you, that you should desist in reviling our gods and they will leave you to your god.” “Uncle,” he said, “shall I not summon them to something which is better for them than their gods?” “What do you summon them to do?” he asked…He replied, “I summon them to utter a saying through which the Arabs will submit to them and they will rule over the non-Arabs.” Abu Jahl said from among the gathering, “What is it, by your father? We will give you it and ten like it?” He answered, “That you should say, ‘There is no deity but Allah.” It should be clear what he was trying to do. He was trying to entice them to convert, by offering them the kind of power they desired most.

This serves to highlight one of the most important concepts within Islam, known as Taqiyya. Some of you may have noted my use of the term in the past. What the Concept of Taqiyya entails is a special dispensation to Muslims, allowing them to lie about Islam, pretend friendship with unbelievers and even pretend conversion to Christianity, in order to further the spread of Islam. Through this concept, they’re able to tell half-truths, misrepresent facts and smile in the faces of unbelievers, all while slowly and patiently worming their way into positions of power.

The end-goal is nothing short of a worldwide Caliphate, governed by Sharia Law. Qur’an 3:28, “Let not believers take disbelievers as allies rather than believers. And whoever [of you] does that has nothing with Allah, except when taking precaution against them in prudence. And Allah warns you of Himself, and to Allah is the [final] destination.”

Commenting on 3:28, the following has been said by trusted commentators, including one of Muhammad’s own companions, Abu Darda. Ibn Kathir, “In this case, such believers are allowed to show friendship outwardly but never inwardly.” Abu Darda, “We smile in the face of some people although our hearts curse them.” In other words, this verse grants them permission to be two-faced, in order to attain the goal of spreading Islam and choking out all other faiths.

In the initial phase of Jihad, you couldn’t ask for better neighbors than Muslims. They’re commanded to be peaceful and friendly, law-abiding and outwardly good representatives of their faith. This is the “Religion of Peace” phase, in which they will preach largely from the Meccan version of the Qur’an, in order to lull their non-believing neighbors into a false sense of security.

However, there is one point where they tend to tip their hand. They will demand concessions from the people around them, in which the people around them are forced to change some of their ways to suit Islamic sensibilities. Examples of this would be requiring local butcher shops to carry halal meats, forcing their employers to set aside special breaks for their prayer times, etc. Any refusal of these concessions will be declared as acts of oppression, because they seem to be such minor things.

This plays hugely in their favor, as evidenced by the events that surround the forced expulsion of Muslims from Mecca. As I mentioned before, Muhammad’s behavior had begun to really irritate the people of Mecca, and it eventually boiled over into an active effort to remove them from their community. In other words, he forced them to not only oppress them, but to drive them out. They unfortunately played right into his hands, and he barely escaped with his life.

Violence and Jihad, Step Two

Upon arrival in Yathrib (Medina), Muhammad gained the support and protection from the Jews of Medina by telling them that they had been persecuted for their faith, and driven out of Mecca for trying to convert the pagans. The Jews bought it, and sheltered the Muslims. By the time they realized what they had done, it was too late, as they had gone into the second stage of Jihad.

Suddenly, the tone of Muhammad’s revelations changed, and he was now ordering them to commit increasingly violent actions, in total contravention of his previous revelations from Allah. This didn’t go unnoticed, and he was eventually questioned about it. He revealed the Doctrine of Abrogation, which states that any conflict between verses in the Qur’an can be settled simply by going with the newer material, as Allah had replace the old with the new. Qur’an 2:106 states, “None of Our revelations do We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, but We substitute something better or similar: Knowest thou not that Allah Hath power over all things?”

A prime example of this is the difference between Qur’an 2:219; Qur’an 4:43; Sahih al-Bukhari, vol 6, book 60, #142; and Qur’an 5:93. These sources show the transitions from the allowance of alcoholic drink, to the admonition that they should avoid drink during prayer times and battle, to the total abolition of alcoholic beverages altogether. It’s understandable that many became a little confused by the changes that came about, but the Doctrine of Abrogation seemed to make sense. They went with it.

Of course, things got a little more drastic than whether or not one could sit down to a glass of wine at the end of the day. Muhammad began ordering his followers to attack the caravans going to and from Mecca, violating a month-long universal truce. When questioned about this, Muhammad revealed Qur’an 2:217, “They ask you about the sacred month – about fighting therein. Say, “Fighting therein is great [sin], but averting [people] from the way of Allah and disbelief in Him and [preventing access to] al-Masjid al-Haram and the expulsion of its people therefrom are greater [evil] in the sight of Allah. And fitnah is greater than killing.” And they will continue to fight you until they turn you back from your religion if they are able. And whoever of you reverts from his religion [to disbelief] and dies while he is a disbeliever – for those, their deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and those are the companions of the Fire, they will abide therein eternally.”

What this verse means is, while fighting during that month-long truce is wrong, the act of oppressing the Muslims and disbelief in Islam are far worse offenses in the sight of Allah. In this way, the offense of breaking the truce is excused in favor of the greater offenses of disbelief and oppression. In other words, his revelation not only excused a blatant violation of a truce, but also abrogated verses such as Qur’an 109:1-6 by making disbelief grounds for waging war.

Of course, this is glossed over by PBS in their article, by creating the impression that it was the Meccans who broke the truce. The article states, “Muhammad also came under formal military attack for the first time in Medina. Consequently, the Qur’an and Muhammad’s teaching also focused on delineating the concept of the just war.” Given that the attacks carried out by his followers were largely unchallenged until the seventh attack, it’s clear that Muhammad wasn’t under formal military attack. In fact, the army that Mecca raised, to protect the caravans, was largely ineffective as they were soundly defeated by Muhammad’s forces.

Violence and Jihad, Step Three

From that point on, they moved right into the final phase of Jihad, characterized by the total violent control and subjugation of anyone who refuses to convert to Islam. In short order, they were forcibly converting people, slaughtering people, subjugating people and generally destroying the entire Arabian peninsula, in the name of Allah. Sahih al-Bukhari 6924, “Allah’s Messenger () said, ‘I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: ‘None has the right to be worshiped but Allah, ‘and whoever said, ‘None has the right to be worshiped but Allah’, Allah will save his property and his life from me,“.

What this means is, they had moved from the idea that there is no compulsion in religion, to the idea that people who refuse to convert are worthless. In fact, Sura 9, the final major Sura revealed by Muhammad prior to his death, outlines very clearly what is to be done with unbelievers.

Here are a few of the most shining examples:

Qur’an 9:5, “And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”

Find the pagans and kill them, unless they choose to convert.

Qur’an 9:29, “Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture – [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled.”

Fight against the Christians and Jews unless they convert or pay the Jizyah.

Qur’an 9:73, “O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.”

Fight against those who refuse to believe, as well as those Muslims who violate the tenets of Islam in some way, and show them no mercy.

Qur’an 9:111, “Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah , so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur’an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great attainment.”

This is the verse that stipulates that martyrdom is the only way into paradise, as Allah has traded their physical lives. All they must do is fight in his cause, until they are killed.

Qur’an 9:123, “O you who have believed, fight those adjacent to you of the disbelievers and let them find in you harshness. And know that Allah is with the righteous.”

In this verse, the command is clear. Fight against any and all disbelievers nearby and show them no mercy.

Finally, there are two passages from Sahih abu Muslim, which detail clearly the state of mind that Muhammad was in.

Sahih abu Muslim 30, “It is reported on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah said: I have been commanded to fight against people so long as they do not declare that there is no god but Allah, and he who professed it was guaranteed the protection of his property and life on my behalf except for the right affairs rest with Allah.”

Sahih abu Muslim 4366, “It has been narrated by ‘Umar b. al-Khattib that he heard the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) say: I will expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula and will not leave any but Muslim.”

Conclusion

It’s clear that there is much that our mass media isn’t telling us, and that’s what is the most alarming. Most people look to mass media to help them form their opinions, for better or worse, so when the media begins to outright lie to people, it makes one wonder why. Not only that, but Ezekiel 33:6 makes very clear that we all have a moral obligation to warn people of impending danger. I mean, if you saw me crossing the street and could tell that I was about to be hit by a car, would you speak up?

This is my primary motivation in writing all of this. God put it on my heart to get the word out, and let people know they’ve been lied to. Our entire civilization has been fighting this threat for 1,400 years, and we’ve finally hit the tipping point where we’re losing. When our elected leadership is both lying to us and helping our enemies, when our mass media is doing the same, when our clergy are feeding the lie from the pulpit and our schools are teaching the lie, then it becomes clear that we are losing this war.

During one of his presentations, Dr. Bill Warner noted a phenomenon. At a multi-faith conference, he had occasion to speak to various members of the clergy. During this time, he asked the Christian and Jewish clergy if they’d ever studied the Qur’an, and they all said they hadn’t. When asked if they’d studied the Bible, all of the Muslim Imams stated that they’d taken courses in it. In Dr. Warner’s words, “That’s known as losing.”
